ROAD
SYSTEM
Tanzania
has a road network of almost 54,000 km. Of these 3,200
km are of asphalt. As many of these roads are in poor
condition, an Integrated Road Project (IRP), a major rehabilitation
project was commenced in 1990.
RAIL
SYSTEM
The main
freight links to the ports are by Tanzania's two railway lines;
the central one links Dar es Salaam to Kigoma with lines to
Mwanza and Arusha. It is run by the Tanzania Railways
Corporation (TRC) while the other railway line, the Tanzania
- Zambia railway (TAZARA) is mainly used to transport to Zambia
in the opposite direction, TRC is being given greater autonomy
and being encouraged to run itself as a commercial undertaking.
PORTS
There are
four major ports; Dar es Salaam,Zanzibar,Tanga and Mtwara.The
Tanzania Harbours Authority administers the Dar es Salaam, Tanga,
Lindi and Mtwara harbours which are ocean ports, Dar es Salaam
is a natural deep-water harbour and is the largest in the country.
A major project to increase the efficiency of the port and its
annual through-put capacity from 3.7 million metric tons was
undertaken inthe late 1980s. Passenger services are available
between Zanzibar and
the Mainland, including Tanga, Lindi, Mtwara and Dar es Salaam.
AIRPORTS
Tanzania
has three international airports at Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro
(Moshi/Arusha) and Zanzibar, as well as 60 airstrips spread
across the country. Financial and technical problems at
Air Tanzania Corporation (ATC) have meant that company has never really
got off the ground.
It operates
regular services to most regional towns and has also scheduled
services to neighbouring countries and to Europe, India and
the Middle-East. There are daily flights to European capitals,
and most major European and African Airlines operate flights
in and out
of Tanzania.
There has
been some increase in the number of passengers, excess baggage
and freight cargo in recent years.While passengers have increased
by 12.4%, excess baggage and cargo have increased by 23.8% and
37.9% respectively.
POWER
Electric
power is an important source of energy in the country.Total
installed generating capacity is 927 mw, consisting of 780 mw
of hydro power and the balance being diesel power.Only 10% of
the potential for electric power has been developed so far,
giving room for investors who might wish, to invest in this
sub-sector.
As regards
electricity interconnection with neighbouring countries, Zambia
through SADC, is supplying power to Tunduma district in Mbeya
region, while efforts are underway to supply power to Malawi
from Tanzania.
TELECOMMUNICATIONS
These facilities
are available in most parts of the country and are linked with
the rest of the world through Dar es Salaam, Telephone, telex,
telegram and telefax services are available in most urban locations.The
telephone network in Dar es Salaam is being rehabilitated.
There are
several private courier service firms.Tanzania has two earth
satellite stationssituated in Dar es Salaam with a total capacity
of 420 channels. These stations connect the country with different
parts of the world.
POSTAL SERVICES
The country
has a good and reliable postal network linking all the country
with four offices of exchange located at Dar es Salaam, Arusha,
Mbeya and Kigoma.All airmails and surface mail reach their destination
in the country within 45 hours.An EMS service is also available.
Philatelic services, remittance service like express, money
orders, postal services and saving bank transactions are also
available.
