FORMALITIES
PASSPORTS
Dependant's
Pass Holders of a Residence Permit can obtain a Dependant who
wishes to
reside in Tanzania with them during their authorized period
of residence.
Entry
Passes
In addition
to the Dependant's pass, passes such as In-ransit pass, visitor's
pass, re-entry pass and landing pass may be issued under the
current immigration regulations for specific purposes such as
holidays, short visits, etc. Details of these may be obtained
from United
Republic of Tanzania Embassies or High Commissions overseas,
or from the immigration Department.
The Investment
Promotion Centre may assist investors to obtain the visas, residence
permits and work permits that are required for an approved enterprise.
VISAS
Business
prospecting visas are required by non-citizen visitors entering
Tanzania specially to undertake market research or initiate
studies with a view to establishing projects.
Applications
for this visa will normally be made by letter to the Tanzanian
Embassy or High Commission in the investor'scountry of residence.
The Business
Prospecting visa is valid for three months initially but can
be extended if necessary. Also holders of this visa may
open bank accounts in Tanzania and register limited companies.
However, they may not take employment or engage in business.
RESIDENTS
PERMITS
Residence
Permit - Class A
Non-residents
who wish to enter or remain in Tanzania in order to engage in
trade, business, progression, agriculture, animal husbandry,
mineral prospecting, etc. require a Residence Permit (class
A). Applications should be made to the Principal Immigration
Officer. A permit is issued initially for a period of
two years, but is renewable up to five years, after that period
a new application must be made.
Residence
Permit - Class B
Non-citizens
who wish to take up employment in Tanzania require a Residence
Permit (Class B). Applications should be made to the Principal
Immigration Officer, through the Labour Commissioner, accompanied
by five photographs, the prescribed fee and a copy of the contract
or proof of employment. The Labour Commissioner decides
whether a work permit should be issued on the basis of the availability
of manpower in Tanzania for the employment in question, and
recommends accordingly to the Immigration Department.
The permit is issued initially for two-year, but is renewable
up to five years.
Approved
enterprises to which a Certificate of Approval has been issued
by the Investment Promotion Centre will be able to obtain timely
Residence Permits (class B) for their expatriate staff.
SPECIAL
DISCLOSURE OR DECLARATIONS REQUIRED
Currency
Regulations
Local
currency
Tanzanian
currency cannot be imported or exported. Any currency
left at the end of a visit may be exchanged for foreign currency
again at branches of the National Bank of Commerce at departure
points upon presentation of the currency declaration form.
Currency:
1 shilling = 100 cents
Coins:
5 cents, 10 cents, 20 cents, 1 shilling, 5 shillings & 20
shillings
Notes:
10 shillings, 20 shillings, 100 shillings, 200 shillings, 500
shillings, 1,000 shillings, 5,000 shillings and 10,000 shillings.
Foreign
Exchange
There is
no limitation to the importation of foreign currency. Foreign
currency can be changed into Tanzanian currency or TSh into
any foreign currency at any branch of the National Bank of Commerce
or through other authorized dealers, e.g. foreign
exchange
bureaus and hotels.
Visitors
to Zanzibar are required to pay for services there in foreign
currency.
Departure
An airport
tax of US $20 (subject to review) or its equivalent on convention
currency is levied for passengers departing the country.
Baggage is weighed at the check in counter and may be inspected
by customs officals.
Health
Visitors
to Tanzania are advised to have valid certificates of vaccination
against yellow fever, preventive dose against malaria before,
during and after the tour.
