Visitors need a valid passport. Visa requirements have recently been relaxed and visas are not generally required. Visitors should have a return ticket and show that they can support themselves during their stay.

Personal effects are allowed into the country duty-free. Visitors are also entitle to bring in goods worth R500. Duty is levied at 20% thereafter. One may not bring in or carry out South African banknotes above the value of R200. 

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF MAJOR INTERNATIONAL AND DOMESTIC AIRPORTS 

South Africa's main airport, the Johannesburg International Airport (formerly Jan Smuts), is about 30 kms from Johannesburg and the SAA terminal near the railway station run every 30 minutes. 

There is also a service to and from Pretoria. Metered taxis are also available. Two other airports, Cape Town and Durban, are also classed as international. Bus and taxi services are available from each. 

SAA, the national carrier, and other smaller airlines such as Comair and Sunair offer numerous flights each day linking SA's major cities.

NATIONAL PARKS  

There are 16 sprawling national parks and game reserves, a paradise for big game, exotic birds and marine life. Among the largest are the Kruger National Park and the Pilanesberg Game Reserve, home to the big five (lion, leopared, elephant, buffalo and rhino). The others include the Kalahari Gemsbok, Golden Gate Highlands, Tsitsikamma, Zuurberg, Tankwa Karoo and Marakele national parks. 

CAVES 

Discover the magic of the Kromdrai and Sterkfontein caves in Gauteng and the Cango caves near Oudtshoorn. Rated among the great natural wonders of the world, studded with stalactites and stalgamites and myriad-coloured limestone formations, these caves, with their deep underground lakes, are certainly worth a visit. 

THE CAPE PENINSULA  

This comprises Table Mountain, Cape Mountain, Cape Point and the Winelands. 

SUN CITY 

A Las Vegas in the bush, where one may sail, swim, gamble, play golf or view game. Nearby is the crocodile park, where,incidentally, crocodile burgers are served. 

THE GARDEN ROUTE  

Two hundred kilometres of golden wheat fields, forests, beaches, mountains and lakes in the Western Cape region. 

HOT SPRINGS 

One of the most prominent of these is Warmbaths, in the northern province, which attracts a million visitors a year.

A good example of this is the Masselsport pleasure resort in the southern region.
