Potential areas for investment includes supply of inputs, development of physical infrastructure, transfer of technology and provision of support services in particular and agriculture in general.

Supply of Inputs

  • Production of high quality seeds/planting materials : commercial seed production (eg. hybrid seeds) and propagation of high quality planting material using bio technology such as tissue culture and grafting.
  • Packaging materials: bottles and cartons of different colours, shapes and sizes which are made of different materials such as glass, paper and plastic.
  • Bio Fertilisers
  • Tools and machinery used for Agriculture and Agro industries

    Development of physical infrastructure

  • Properly designed and well managed market places in strategic locations with parking, water, electricity, toilets and access roads
  • Cold storage facilities
  • Pre-cooling facilities
  • Warehouses
  • Facilities for sorting, grading and packing
  • Refrigerated or air conditioned transport for horticultural and other perishable products
  • Industrial sites with specialized warehouses, cold storage and waste disposal facilities that the agro-industries require.
  • Basic infrastructure such as well-developed ports, airports, rail facilities and roads (especially between major production centers and transport centers or market yards).

    Technology transfer

  • Intensive cultivation under controlled conditions : cultivation of high value crops such as bell pepper, strawberry etc. and also tissue culture plants under green houses, poly tunnels, with drip irrigation and the use of advanced technology for fertilizer application etc.

    Food products:

  • Processed fruits and vegetables: Canning and bottling of fruits and vegetables, pulp, jam, sauces, juices, pickles, chutneys, ready to serve drinks, dehydrated fruits (pineapple, mango), dehydrated vegetables (Jak), frozen fruits and vegetables etc
  • Spices in value added forms such as powders, mixes, tablets, essential oils and oleoresins (eg: Cinnamon in powder or tablet form)

  • Public-Private research/extension programs on cost-sharing/ cost-recovery basis
  • Cost recovery based testing and certification: various inspection, testing and certification services in the food and agricultural sector.
  • Forward contracts: for agricultural produce to guarantee an acceptable price for both the seller and the buyer in the market.

    Production of Agricultural Commodities and Value added Products

  • Plantation crops:
    (i) Tea: Value added tea
    (ii) Rubber: Rubber based products: tyres, footwear, gloves etc.
    (iii) Coconut: coconut based product such as fresh nuts, copra, coconut cream and milk, desiccated coconut, ekels, charcoal, coconut shell products

  • Horticultural crops:
    (i) A wide range of Fruits and Vegetables in fresh form and semi processed and processed from.
    (ii) Foliage and cut flowers
