Business Opportunities
in Singapore
Electronics and Precision Engineering
The electronics and precision engineering
sector is the main driver of Singapore's manufacturing
industry, and it's growing steadily. Several sub-sectors
are shaping up with new growth engines, with leading companies
expanding their presence in Singapore.
AFPD, a Toshiba-Matsushita joint venture established in
November 2002, opened the world's largest production plant
for low-temperature polysilicon thin-film transistor LCD
at Singapore's Advanced Display Park. This marked the
birth of Singapore's advanced display industry, one of
the sub-sectors earmarked for rapid development.
In January 2003, Taiwan-based United Microelectronics
Corporation (UMC), the world's second biggest maker
of made-to-order chips, started moving equipment into
its new wafer fab plant at the Pasir Ris Wafer Fab Park.
The 300-mm wafer foundry - UMC's first in Singapore
- will be run by UMCi, a US$3.6 billion tripartite venture
between UMC, Germany-based Infineon Technologies and
EDB.
Sanmina-SCI, the world's third largest electronics manufacturing
service provider, is one of many that have made Singapore
its regional headquarters. Seagate Technologies, the
world leader in storage products, has extensive operations
in Singapore, including the Factory of the Future. It
recently announced plans to build a new S$200 million
plant for the world's largest recording media.
EDB is keen to see more companies in electronics
and precision engineering use Singapore to manufacture
high value-added products, carry out R&D, create
and manage intellectual property, and manage regional
operations.
The sub-sectors of particular interest
are:
- Semiconductors
- Electronics Manufacturing Services,
Storage and Peripherals
- Electronic Modules and Components
- Precision Modules and Components
- Machinery and Systems
